Baler initiated recycling program at Donson Machine
Donson found a cleaner and more economic way to dispose of their waste, when buying af baler for cardboard and plastic waste.
Baler initiated recycling program at Donson Machine
Donson Machine purchased a Bramidan B30 Wide baler when they looked for a better solution for their waste disposal. The vertical baler provided them with a resolution that saves both time and money.
Placed in Alsip outside Chicago, Donson Machine is a manufacturer of precision machine parts and in medical applications. This machine shop generates large quantities of plastic shrink wrap and cardboard waste in their manufacturing processes.
Recycling was implemented
Donson Machine did not have any recycling program until recently. The engineers used to throw their recyclables into the same dumpster which was used for garbage. But in the process of finding a more optimized waste handling, they started to sort waste at the facility.
Before the baler installation, employees transported all cardboard and plastic shrink wrap to the local recycler. Mike Flores, who is Shipping Manager at Donson, says, “We used to put it on a truck and drive it down to the recycler twice a week. Now they only pick it up from us once a week.” The compacted bales are placed behind the factory until the recycler picks them up. The baler model B30 Wide is able to compact cardboard into one industry standard 500 kg bale. An additional benefit is that they keep shrink wrap out of the landfill.
Optimizing working flows
The B30 Wide frees up space in the machine shop that was previously used for loose waste, allowing for more efficient waste handling, a larger production area, as well as a cleaner solution. The vertical baler also enables the engineers to concentrate their efforts, working at the production line. By eliminating the need to leave their daily tasks to dispose of waste at another location, the baler solution permits the employees to recycle discarded material at its source.
Quick return of investment
Bramidan B30 Wide vertical baler became an unexpected source of income for Donson Machine. Before they baled their recyclables, the manufacturer was not profiting from their waste. Now, they are able to sell their cardboard bales to the recycler. “We did not get paid for the waste earlier,” Flores says, pointing to a finished bale, “Now, we do.” With the time saved on breaking down boxes for the engineers combined with the savings from removing a dumpster, Donson will likely see a return on their investment in no time.
